Even though the production model of the all-new 2024 Volkswagen iD.7 has not yet been revealed, it already has people talking! This new electric Volkswagen sedan was presented during the CES that took place this past January and already available in the European. One thing is for sure: it will be an exceptional vehicle that –once it makes its way to the Volkswagen Canada catalog- will find a spot amongst the very best of its category.
One out of ten electric vehicles promised by the Volkswagen Group –between now and 2026-, the iD.7 will be the third of the iD family to be available on the North American market just after the arrival of the Volkswagen iD.Buzz (the electric version of the emblematic Westfalia) over the course of 2024.
Although, to date, not many details have been revealed, Complexe VW 440, your Volkswagen dealership in Laval, close to Terrebonne, Montreal North and the North Shore of Montreal, will share all of the available information regarding this long-awaited sedan, notably on the expected pricing of the Volkswagen ID.7!
iD.7: iD.Aero or Jetta electric?
This electric Volkswagen takes its inspiration mostly from the Volkswagen iD.Aero concept car. Its dimensions –described in detail below- place it in the midsize sedan category. This means that its size would be closer to the late Passat rather than an electric Jetta.
RWD and AWD Finishes
At launch, we will likely receive an initial rear-wheel-drive version of the VW ID.7. With an electric motor located at the rear, this version will offer sporty driving and extended range.
The German manufacturer hasn’t forgotten Canadian drivers! If you love engaging, road-hugging driving that only a sedan can provide but desire more control in winter conditions, the AWD trim will be appealing.
Early road tests conducted in Europe have already excited automotive journalists, with the sedan standing out for its exemplary behavior. It combines balanced suspension, controlled movements, and remarkable agility in corners. On the highway, it offers a quiet drive with exceptional ride comfort, even on uneven roads. Promising qualities for our market!
Interior and Exterior Design
Now that images have been revealed and the model has made its way to European roads, more is known about its design and features! At first glance, the Volkswagen ID.7 captures attention with its shape reminiscent of sports coupes. Its fastback silhouette and modular electric architecture (or MEB for insiders), enhanced by well-sized wheels, give it a very successful appearance.
Engineers have paid particular attention to aerodynamics to optimize the ID.7’s energy efficiency and range, enhancing the driving experience. The exterior lines are largely inspired by the Vizzion (unveiled in 2019) and Aero (2022) concepts. Practicality is not overlooked, with a generous trunk accessible via a liftback-type hatch reminiscent of the Arteon.
Inside, comfort and cutting-edge technologies reign supreme. The Volkswagen ID.7 offers generous seating thanks to its long wheelbase. Refinement is manifested in high-end equipment, notably seats with temperature and humidity sensors and a massage function. The intelligent panoramic sunroof is another notable feature, capable of switching from transparent to opaque based on your preferences.
The build quality is exemplary inside the VW ID.7, and Volkswagen also innovates with its new HVAC system: intelligent electric motors adjust airflow for optimal distribution. Stay tuned for more details!
Volkswagen iD.7: Dimensions
The first available numbers give us 5,000 mm in length and a generous wheelbase of almost 3,000 mm. To give you a clearer idea, these numbers were 4,918 and 2,803 mm for the late Passat.
While interior dimensions and wheel size are not yet known, these figures allow us to anticipate a particularly generous interior volume, offering comfortable space for adult passengers.
Battery, Range and Power
The ID.7 features an electric motor powered by an 82 kWh battery (77 kWh usable). The rear-wheel-drive version develops 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, delivered to the rear wheels for sporty sensations. As for the all-wheel-drive version, it adds a motor, boosting the combined power to 335 horsepower.
The battery and car design promise generous range—though North American figures remain to be confirmed. For reference, European standards estimate a maximum range of 702 km with the 86 kWh battery, or 618 km with the 77 kWh one, which will be offered in Canada. Given the more generous European cycle, expect a lower range here. This should still translate to a maximum EPA range of about 525 km, according to current estimates—a competitive figure!
Volkswagen iD.7: Towing Capacity and Cargo Space
For the time being, we do not know what towing capacity to expect for the Volkswagen iD.7. As a comparison, the Passat offered a 1,000 pound towing capacity, while the iD.4 can tow up to 2,700 pounds.
We could expect to find a towing capacity that is situated somewhere between the two.
It is the same thing when it comes to cargo space: no data has been revealed to date. However, in France, the trunk volume is 532 L, and we can logically expect similar data on our side of the Atlantic.
What VW technologies to expect
On this subject, the concept revealed during the CES was incredibly surprising, offering evolved technologies in line with Volkswagen know-how. You will find augmented reality head-up display alongside an all-new air conditioning and heating system with digital command; this system detects the arrival of the driver prior to them entering the vehicle, which then automatically starts the heating or air conditioning, depending on the season.
Better yet: thanks to voice commands, you could, for example, say that your hands are cold and steering wheel heating will be activated automatically. As for the air vents, they will aim towards your hands automatically too.
Finally, on board, you will also find lighted touch controls along with a large 15- inch touch screen. More details on technologies will come; several advanced driver assistance features are also expected.
2025 VW iD.7: Price and release date
For now, the manufacturer has not confirmed any pricing for the VW ID.7 for the North American market. However, rumors suggest a price similar to those of the ID.4 for a high-end version. Note that the latter ranges from $51,738 to $63,738, excluding government rebates. Therefore, we can expect a competitive price for the new sedan, which will most likely qualify for subsidies! Initially scheduled for summer 2024, the release was postponed, giving rise to rumors that we might not get this model. But rest assured: Volkswagen Canada has confirmed the upcoming arrival of the ID.7, and we should know more by next spring!
